Project Challenges

Restaurant software is used mid-service, one-handed, by staff who cannot stop to learn it. Anything that takes a second too long is abandoned for paper.

Service sets the constraints, and service does not pause for software.

  • Speed over completeness The common actions have to be immediate; everything else can sit a menu deeper.
  • Shared devices Several staff use the same screens through a shift, so the current state has to be obvious at a glance.
  • Service cannot stop Errors and dropped connections have to fail into something recoverable rather than losing an order.

What we built

We built the ordering path first and measured everything else against it, keeping configuration out of the way of the four or five actions that happen hundreds of times a night.
